Afghanistan : The death toll in Wednesday’s earthquake in Afghanistan has crossed 1,000, while more than 1,500 people have been injured. The casualties are feared to increase further. Mohammad Amin Hadifa, chairman of Afghanistan’s Provincial Information and Culture Directorate, told Xinhua news agency that the quake and subsequent landslides in two districts of Barmal in Paktika province killed more than 1,000 people and caused more than 1,500. more injured.
In neighboring Khost province, at least 25 people were killed and 100 others injured after the quake destroyed more than 600 homes, mosques and shops, according to provincial officials. The Prime Minister’s Office wrote on Twitter, hours after the earthquake, Acting Prime Minister Mullah Mohamed Hassan Akhund chaired an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning.
Hassan Akhund also ordered a grant of 1 billion Afghanis (over $11.2 million) to aid victims of the natural disaster. He said that in the meeting all the concerned agencies have been ordered to reach the spot immediately. Make use of all available resources and provide all necessary assistance to save the lives of the affected people.
The 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck 44 km south-west of Khost. Gyan district is the most affected area in Paktika. The earthquake destroyed and damaged several houses in the area and eroded the ground in Paktika.
The quake hit the mountainous areas and officials sent helicopters with life-saving equipment and medical personnel to the area, while medical and rescue teams were also on their way to the affected areas.
