Old Kashi, situated on the banks of the Ganges of the city, is the city southern assembly seat of Varanasi. This is the historic seat from where Congress candidate Dr. Sampoornanand was elected MLA twice and became the Chief Minister of the state. But the charisma was shown by Shyamdev Rai Chaudhary ‘Dada’ of BJP, who was elected seven times from this assembly constituency. Last time Dr. Neelkanth Tiwari got ticket after cutting Dada’s ticket and he won by defeating Congress candidate Dr. Rajesh Mishra, former MP of Banaras. Then Yogi joined the cabinet.
The first two elections were in the name of Dr. Sampoornanand who won without campaigning.
The southern assembly seat of Varanasi has a very proud past. Dr. Sampoornanand won the first election after independence in 1951. Then in the 1957 elections also he won and became the Chief Minister of the state. But never campaigned. By the way, this assembly constituency was occupied by the Congress from 1951 to 1967. For the first time in the 1967 elections, Congress had to face defeat in this seat and CPI’s Rustam Santin was elected MLA. Then in 1969 and 1974, the Jan Sangh waved its flag.
Shyamdev Rai Choudhary, a seven-time MLA
Whatever the government may have been in the state, the city southern assembly constituency has been occupied by the Bharatiya Janata Party for 33 years. Shyamdev Rai Choudhary of BJP was elected MLA seven times from 1889 to 2017. In 2017, BJP gave ticket to Dr. Neelkanth Tiwari from the southern assembly and Dr. Tiwari continued the winning streak. He slammed Congress candidate Dr Rajesh Mishra, former MP of Banaras, in a tough struggle. Then became a minister in the Yogi government.
